Getting Started — Quill Documentation | Quill

Install Quill, sign in, and capture your first meeting.

1. Download and install

Open the downloaded file, follow the prompts, then launch Quill.

2. Sign in

Click Sign in with your browser.

3. Grant permissions

Mac

Both prompts appear on the "Let me tune in" onboarding screen.

Microphone access. Approve the popup.

System audio access (the other side of the call):

Without system audio permission, transcripts will be one-sided (your voice only).

Windows

Nothing to grant. Quill captures mic and system audio directly.

4. Connect your calendar (recommended)

Click Connect on the Google Calendar or Outlook card during onboarding, or set it up later in Settings → General → Calendar.

When your calendar is connected, Quill will be able to auto-start for meetings that do not have a video call link, contact recognition will improve, and Quill can help you stay organized each day.

5. Pick your audio inputs

Ensure Quill is set to use the right microphone and speaker/headphones so that it can hear you and others.

  1. Go to Settings > Audio.
  2. Under Microphone, select the mic you use for meetings (e.g., your headset or built-in mic).
  3. Under Speaker, select where your meeting audio plays from (e.g., headphones or speakers).

Common questions

Do I need internet?
No. Transcription and speaker recognition runs locally. AI note generation needs internet unless you've set a local model in Settings → Custom LLM.

Does Quill record everything automatically?
No. It prompts you for each detected meeting. Disable auto-detection in Settings if you prefer.

Can I use Quill without a calendar?
Yes. Start and stop recordings manually from the recording bar. Quill can also auto-detect when you join meetings on common video conferencing platforms.

Is my data sent to Quill's servers?
Audio never leaves your device. AI note generation sends transcript text to whichever LLM provider you've selected. Configuring BYOLLM can keep that local too.

I'm setting Quill up for someone else.
Configure templates, meeting types, and the LLM choice in Settings before handoff.
